I think the Radio Shack at its best was about 32hz to 10,000hz which is the C-Weighted Setting. In the A-Weighted setting, the response is 500hz to 10,000hz. But for about a ~$100 Investment, the Room EQ Wizard would give you a very powerful tool. That is a massively more powerful tool than a simple SPL Meter. WTF is Dynamic Range?
An SPL, or “Decibel” meter, is a sound power meter to assist with setting the speaker levels. As speakers have different sensitivities they produce different levels of audio. One may be louder or quieter than another, and how the room is laid out will also have an effect, but the goal is to have similar levels from all speakers reaching the viewing position. SPL meters are generally not accurate devices, but they are at least specified by the manufacturer to provide a certain level of measurement accuracy across a frequency range. In our ISO accredited calibration lab, we automated the process and instead verified every meter across its full specified frequency range.

The Ideal SPL For Home Theater

You may want to see just the SPL of the movie you are watching for a few seconds without turning on the lights or finding a flashlight. So, ANY of them will work sufficiently well in order to compare two or more sources with identical stimuli using the same meter for their relative similarity or differences. The apps are ok, but every phone mic has a different roll off so I don’t trust them totally. I have heard even less as to how one can even compare of determine an absolute level on an SPL meter. My daughter likes to use the gStrings app to tune her guitar, which works really well since it is measuring frequency instead of amplitude. Has anyone used the DB meters on the Droid or any other smartphone?
It was very easy to run down the batteries on the analog Radio Shack meter since it didn't have this feature. Make sure you get one that is from 32hz-8khz if using pink noise for test signals which is what many receivers use. Obviously the more accurate the better, some are +/- 2db and some are better than that.
Move to the center speaker and adjust its level to closely match the first. It is normal for amplifiers to increase or decrease sound levels by 1dB increments and it may not be possible to get an exact match. Variance of 1 or 2dB during calibration is normal, but it will settle around a value. Home Theater Setup
While an approximation may be possible by ear, it is best done with an SPL meter. A second factor to consider is simply that it also verifies that each speaker is in the correct position! While working on an initial installation it is imperative to verify that audio is emanating from the selected speaker.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. And if they are not, one best start saving for an Extech calibrator which depending on single or dual levels, will generally cost you in the ball park of $300 or $400. And I have yet to read of a compelling reason that someone requires an absolute reading. Using a iPhone or a large capsule SPL meter and expecting 'calibrated' performance is an oxymoron.
